MATT'S LAW

Why Matt’s Law

When Matt was killed there wasn’t a hazing law in the state of CA penal code.  The hazing law in the Educational Code stipulated that to prosecute those involved they must be a student in the school or in an organization recognized by the school.  And, that a death caused from hazing was only a misdemeanor.  Three of the seven perpetrators in Matt’s case were no longer students, and the fraternity had lost its charter and was no longer recognized by the school.  This presented a horrible problem for us, and so, we changed the law for future victims.  It is now a felony to kill, or seriously injure, someone during a hazing in the state of CA, whether they are a student or a part of an organization recognized by the school.

MATT UPDATES

In 2005 we didn’t have social media to use for updating people on what was going on with the criminal case, Matt’s Law, and all the documentaries, etc. we were doing to make a difference in Matt’s memory. Matt’s supporters grew from a handful to over a thousand in a matter of a few short months, wanting to know what was happening and how they could help. Below are the emails Matt’s Mom sent to the masses throughout the years. She is eternally grateful for their amazing support at the time, and their continued support to this day.
